Quoting John the Baptist, who used these words to point his disciples to the Messiah (John 1:29), the congregation joins in this hymn that is addressed to Christ who is now present in his body and blood. Three times the Gospel is clearly spoken, as if to drive home a message that is both simple to understand and yet unfathomable to comprehend.
Again, numerous musical settings of the Agnus Dei exist in a variety of styles. While it is possible to substitute a different hymn at this point, one is hard-pressed to find something as fitting.
